Autumn is the season of puddings, and I’ll be honest, I love anything that’s hot and slathered in custard. This apple crumble for two is delicious and warming for when the nights are getting colder and dark and we need something homemade and comforting.
Apple Crumble For Two
Apple crumble is a classic. Simple and easy to make, yet very satisfying too. While I’m sure there are a great many recipes out there, there are a few things I like to do differently.
Firstly I always part-cook my apples. I like a chunky apple crumble and I find if I don’t cook the apples a little bit first, they don’t always cook through. Dicing the apples smaller I find can sometimes end with them becoming too mushy, and it feels as though I’m eating apple sauce with a crunchy top.
I also like to add a tablespoon full of oats to my Apple Crumble recipe. I find they add a bit of texture. For extra crunch, you could also add a couple of blitzed digestive biscuits or plain hobnobs.

To make this apple crumble for two I used three large cooking apples – once peeled these weighed approximately 300 grams. As cooking apples can be quite sharp this recipes does have quite a bit of sugar. As an alternative, you could use eating apples as these are sweeter, but as they are smaller you would need to use 4-5.
This recipe can easily be doubled or even tripled to cater for more people. Cooking times may need to be increased slightly to account for this.
Can I Freeze This Apple Crumble For Two?
While you can technically freeze crumble, as in it won’t harm it or make unsafe to eat, I prefer not to. I always find it goes very soggy when being reheated after being frozen. You could however prep the apples and freeze those.
Can I Make This Dish Ahead of Time?
Yes. Crumble can absolutely be made ahead of time. My advice would be to make the two elements – the apples and the crumble topping but keep them separate until just before cooking.
Can I Reheat Apple Crumble For Two?
The crumble can be reheated and finished off at a later time. If you have some apple crumble leftover, the best thing to do is to allow it to cool, and refrigerate until you want to eat it. It will keep well in the fridge for three to four days.
To reheat, either microwave on high until piping hot or reheat in the oven, covering the top with foil to prevent it becoming burnt.
