There is no denying it, I have a massive sweet tooth. I love pudding, desserts, sweets and fizzy drinks in all their forms. While I have recently made a lot of effort to cut back to having more occasional treats, it does still worry me the amount of sugar I eat and the impact this is having on my health, particularly my oral health.
How to keep your teeth clean and healthy
Looking after your teeth is so important, especially if like me you like to indulge in sugary treats from time to time. There are lots of little things you can do to help your oral hygiene – most of these don’t cost a penny and can be done easily at home.
- Brushing your teeth for a least two minutes twice a day. If you struggle to time this you could set a timer on your phone or buy a toothbrush that has a timer function on it.
- Ensure the toothpaste you use contains Flouride
- Floss at least once each day
- Don’t wash your mouth out with water after brushing.
- Avoid putting water on the toothpaste before brushing your teeth as this can wash away the fluoride.
- Limit sugar intake and avoid Smoking
- Brush babies teeth as soon as they come through
- Don’t brush too hard as this can damage teeth and gums
- Try small circular motions rather than a back and forward sawing motion

Sometimes we may have oral issues that need a little bit of extra help. I actually have quite sensitive teeth so have been using Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief to see if it made a difference. I find that my teeth are especially sensitive to hot and cold – not good in the summer when I want to enjoy an ice lolly or a frozen drink.
I started to notice the sensitivity in my teeth was improved after a few days of using the toothpaste and I really hope it will make a difference as I continue to use it. While it is a bit more than I normally would spend on toothpaste, as the product works I don’t mind spending a bit extra.

While there is plenty we can do at home to look after our teeth, regular checkups at the dentist are important too – even if you don’t feel you have any issues or have mostly false teeth.
