So this week we finally went back to a restaurant we first visited almost three years ago. Eat the Bird Taunton is one of those places we’ve been meaning to go back to but have never quite got there – mostly because the first time we went it was to celebrate finding out we were expecting a baby girl – parenting has since rather got in the way of our date nights!
Eat The Bird Taunton Review
As lockdown finally started ease and restaurants have finally started to open up again, my husband and I decided it might well be time for a decent date night. So we left our daughter with her grandparents for the night and booked a table at Eat The Bird, Taunton.
We did actually peruse a few menus from locally before deciding but the Eat the Bird definitely had the most appeal – it just felt like our type of food – my husbands especially!
The Restaurant
The restaurant has a very laid back vibe. Tables are polished wood and metal pipework – it’s very casual which we like. The tables are huge which is nice, there’s nothing worse than going out in a big group and struggling to fit everything on the tables.
There is plenty of outside seating – perfect if you’re still a little nervous about being inside with lots of other people. Eat the bird has also removed lots of table from inside too so it felt very spacious and we were several meters away from other customers at all times.
The Menu
As the name suggests, Eat The Bird Taunton specializes in what they call Funky Fried Chicken. The menu has a selection of chicken burgers with a variety of toppings and fillings.
There is also a selection of beef burgers again with lots of toppings and veggie/vegan menu too.
The sides include fries and dirty fries, mac & cheese, pickles and slaw, chicken wings, chicken bites and various sauces.
The Food
After several minutes of drooling over the menu we ordered:
Pig & Peck: Chicken burger in a bun with pulled pork and pickle brine slaw
Double Dip: Chicken burger, Bacon & Cheese dipped in southern gravy
Dirty Mac n Cheese: Mac n Cheese topped with chicken chunks, fried onions, BBQ sauce and Ritz Crackers
Southern Poutine: Fries with bacon, fried halloumi, crispy onions and southern gravy

Southern Poutine at Eat the Bird Taunton
My favourite thing we ordered was definitely the Southern Poutine. The fries were so crispy, probably some of the best fries I’ve ever had in a restaurant. Everything just went so well together just couldn’t stop eating it!
The next best thing was, of course, the chicken in my chicken burger. It was tasty, crispy, perfectly cooked – delicious. For me, the bun could have been toasted a little more and the pickle brine slaw was just way too spicy so I didn’t end up eating it. While some people might realise this, I think it could do with a mention on the menu.
The Dirty Mac & Cheese was delicious too – we especially loved the crushed ritz crackers on top – something we’ll be trying at home!
My husband loved his double-dip burger and said he couldn’t fault it.
The Bill
The bill came to just under £35 – which may seem expensive for two burgers, two sides and two drinks BUT we did have the most expensive sides on the menu. Normal fries would have been a lot less. We loved what we had thought and were happy to pay what we did.
Eat The Bird Taunton – Overall Review
Overall, we loved the food at Eat The Bird Taunton. Some restaurants with this type of food just don’t get it quite right and this isn’t the case here at all. Service was a little a slow at times, but post-Covid this could be due to having fewer staff members working on shift.
We would definitely eat here again in the future and have recommended Eat the Bird to friends and family.
