We recently visited Skewer House Taunton for the fourth time so I thought it was about time I wrote a review of our experience and the food served there.
Well, if you hadn’t guessed by the fact that it was our fourth visit, generally speaking, we’ve always really enjoyed our food at Skewer House.
Skewer House is a Portuguese restaurant that serves traditional Portuguese Skewers along with a selection of sides and desserts. The choice of Skewers includes Lamb, Beef, Chicken, King Prawn, Fish and a vegetarian option of Halloumi and vegetables.

Sides include fries, sweet potato fries, halloumi, vegetables, corn, and salad. All of the food is served at your table ‘family style’ and the freshly cooked skewers are hung on tall hooks in the middle of the tables.
You can also order starters of olives, garlic bread and chourico.
Note: I’ve included an image of the menu from a previous visit – I did take one this time but as the restaurant was quite dark it wasn’t easy to read, this one is much clearer, just be aware prices might be different to those pictured.
What Did We Order At Skewer House Taunton?
We decided to order the ‘House Special For Two’ x 2 for the three of us to share plus one extra meat skewer. My husband has a really big appetite so we wanted to make sure there would be more than enough food for all of us to share.
The house special consists of a selection of starters to share (garlic bread, olives and Chourico) one meat skewer, three sides to share and one dessert to share. Whether this would be enough for two people depends on your appetite and how hungry you are. I think it would make a great light lunch but you may want to add an extra skewer for a more filling dinner.
We ordered one beef skewer, one lamb skewer and one pork skewer. For side dishes, we chose two sweet potato fries, one regular, two halloumis and one portion of corn of the cob which consists of two cobettes.

The Starters
One of the great things about Skewer House Taunton is because the menu is quite limited the food comes to your tables really quickly. Perfect if you’re really hungry like we were.
Another great thing is getting to cook your own chourico at the table. The chourico is brought to your table in a small ceramic dish and set alight by the server. You rotate until it’s cooked the sausage and serve it on your plates. It’s delicious and really fun spectacle to start your meal with.

I also wanted to add that the Garlic Bread is incredible, some of the best Garlic bread we’ve ever eaten. The olives are good too and as neither of my companions like them, I got to eat the lot!

The Mains
So, as I mentioned above, for the main course we had Beef, Lamb and Pork Skewers.
These were all delicous.
For me personally, the pork was a little bit overcooked and starting to go dry but I think on the whole I just prefer pork to be slow-cooked and I’d probably choose a chicken or fish skewer next time instead.

The sides were all yummy, nothing quite beats proper fried chips and halloumi!
The Desserts
The last time I visited the restaurant there was only one dessert available at 7.30pm on a Friday night which was disappointing when we’d ordered a set menu that included desserts, so I was hoping for a better experience this time around.
We were not disappointed. Desserts included a choice of four different cheesecakes (Biscoff, Caramac, White Kinder Beuno and Passionfruit), Freshly made mini doughnuts, Skossants (a homemade cross between and croissant and profiterole) and the traditional Pastel Del Natas.

Our Caramac cheesecke which my husband started on before I could take a pic!
I shared a Caramac Cheesecake with my husband and my brother ordered the mini doughnuts which came with a pot of white chocolate sauce and crumbled up Oreos to dip them in. I tried one and they were incredible – would 100% recommend it.
The cheesecake was really nice too – soft and creamy which I prefer over a dry baked cheesecake any day.
Would We Eat At Skewer House Taunton Again?
Yes, we would definitely eat here again. The food is delicious and reasonably priced and there’s a really lovely, relaxed atmosphere. On a summer evening, you could definitely imagine you were actually in Portugal!
There are only a couple of small downsides to be aware of – while the restaurant itself is lovely and cosy the tables and seating are on the small side so for a table of four in can feel quite cramped. Service on previous visits has felt a little rushed as the food does come out very quickly and the staff are attentive and keen to clear plates.
We didn’t mind on this occasion as we were heading to a gig afterwards but if you prefer a longer sitting this might not be the place for you – either that or plan drinks somewhere else before or afterwards.
The Bill
All together our food and drink came to £80 exactly. We only had soft drinks so I think with a couple of alcoholic drinks this would have been closer to £100 for the three of us. We all really enjoyed the food – my brother who dined with us says this is his favourite restaurant and we’re planning to visit again for his 18th birthday.
You can find Skewer House Taunton On Facebook – booking a table is advised as they are often fully booked, especially on weekends.
